The Furleigh Estate vines are thriving in the current hot weather. Flowering usually takes place during Wimbledon but it was all done and dusted this year by the time Djokovic and Kerber raised their trophies. The fruit set has been phenomenal as can be seen from this photo of our Bacchus vines. With all vines being around two weeks ahead, fans of our Bacchus Dry or Bacchus Fumé wines in particular look like being in for a treat this year.
The internationally renowned cheese expert, Juliet Harbutt, educated and entertained in equal measure during our artisanal cheese and wine matching evening in June. We were so lucky that Juliet managed to fit us in to her whistle-stop tour of Europe before returning to her native New Zealand. The wine and cheese matches were surprising and showed both the cheeses and our wines in a new light. Dorset Blue Vinney and Tyrannosaurus Red is now a firm favourite as is Blanc de Blanc and fresh ricotta. If you haven’t already, why not give those a try?
The Hansford-Edwards clan are soon to head off on their holidays. The Lot region of France and its fruity Cahors wine is calling. Before leaving, we’ll be making the most of what Dorset has to offer this summer. The junior Edwards apprentice winemakers will be off sailing in Lyme Regis for a week. With its glorious beach set in the picturesque Lyme Bay, Mary Anning and her amazing fossils as well as the Hix Fish & Oyster House and Alexandra Hotel & Restaurant, Lyme Regis is my perfect seaside town.
Sladers Yard is a contemporary art gallery and café in West Bay, Bridport. It’s current exhibition of Alex Lowry’s still light paintings (7th July till 9th September) caught my eye. His luminous paintings of West Bay, Chesil Beach and Portland strip away unnecessary fuss and seem to me to reveal the real essence of the place. A reminder of the stillness of the places we enjoy when the flock of summer visitors have left.
If you are thinking of going to the Food Rocks food festival run by the Mark Hix team in Lyme Regis on 8th/9th September, then watch out for the Furleigh Estate team. We will be serving glasses of wine to eat with the seafood delicacies that will be available. Bottles of Furleigh Estate wine will of course also be on sale.
Our popular Nordic Walking courses will return in the autumn. Paul and Julia from the Bridport Garden Studios will be leading their next Furleigh Estate Nordic Walking introductory session at 5.30pm on Thursday 6th September - book here.
Finally, more details will follow, but we are planning a very special Scandi meal with our very own Norwegian chef, Christian Ǿrner, on Thursday 27th September. Many treats and surprises are in store during this evening and it really is one not to be missed.
With best wishes for happy summer days,
Furleigh Estate: 31st Jul 2018 11:12:00
