Wine of the Year Competition 2010

Wine of the Year Competition 2010

19th June 2010
Furleigh Estate, which lies just 5 miles north of Bridport and is owned by Rebecca Hansford and Ian Edwards, won a total of five medals in the English and Welsh Wine of the Year Competition 2010. Sea Pink 2009, a still rose wine, won an amazing Gold Medal.

The national competition is judged by five Masters of Wine and each wine is assessed against a standard, international scale. Over 230 wines were entered and just 26 gold medals awarded.

Ian Edwards, the winemaker, said “We are absolutely delighted to win gold with a wine from our first commercial harvest. It just shows what the wonderful Dorset soils can produce.”

Furleigh Estate has 22,000 vines, with varieties including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Bacchus. It produces sparkling as well as still red, white and rosé wines in its 5,000sq ft purpose built winery.

The wine is available from Washingpool Farm Shop, local restaurants and online at www.furleighestate.co.uk.

The Furleigh Estate Classic Cuvee 2009 has been judged the best sparkling wine in the South West Vineyards Association 2011 annual competition.

Ian Edwards, winemaker at Furleigh Estate, said "We are very pleased to have won this trophy. We thought it was a lovely wine, but to have this confirmed by very experienced judges and amongst some stiff competition is very special."

Furleigh Estate wine is available to buy at Washingpool Farmshop and Palmers Wine Store, both Bridport, or from www.furleighestate.co.uk.
